Time Out!

Have you ever wondered how we prevent errors in the operating room? We took lessons learned from the airline industry and implemented them in healthcare. The Time Out is a defined period before an operation starts that forces the surgeon and the surgical team to stop what they are doing and ensure that we are performing the correct operation, on the correct patient, at the correct site. It empowers any member of the team to stop the process if a discrepancy is identified. When I was the Chief of Surgery I made it my mission to transform the time out into a surgeon lead, systematic and reproducible process to insure patient safety.
